Facebook Login Page differences in Firefox IE Chrome

Category: Browsers,SocialNetworking,TechnologyKamlesh @ 11:23 am

I am noticing that the Login Page of Facebook appears with Mark’s picture in Firefox.  The same does not happen in IE10/Chrome.  Is this the same behavior for everyone?

Facebook Login bug

Category: Browsers,SocialNetworking,TechnologyKamlesh @ 6:07 am

Since last few days, on my Windows 8 Laptop, I am getting the following screen after I try to Login to Facebook account:

Facebook Login showing blank page with LOGIN_ATTEMPT=1 in the URL

It shows the link “https://www.facebook.com/login.php?login_attempt=1” on the URL and displays a blank white page.  The login_attempt parameter shows value 1. To solve this problem, I just reload (refresh) the page using F5 key.  Once reloaded, it shows the home page properly.

I primarily use Firefox to access Social Networking websites. Based on my initial analysis, the above Facebook login issue started since Firefox got updated from version 18.0.1 to 18.0.2.

Firefox browser updated from 18.0.1 to 18.0.2

As assumed it to be a Firefox bug.  I even tried the following to troubleshoot:

  • Cleared up Cache in Firefox and restarted the browser
  • Reset the Internet Connection
  • Even tried this from my another Desktop PC.
  • Changed DNS Servers to Google DNS (8.8.8.8, 4.4.4.4)

Nothing from above options, helped me to resolve the problem in Firefox.  As issue kept repeating for few days, I experimented other browsers to login to Facebook.

Surprisingly, both Internet Explorer and Chrome showed up similar problem, but in a different way.  The F5 (refresh/reload) command once again came to my resume in other browsers.  Below is the screenshots from IE 10, which shows HTTP 500 Internal Server Error:

IE10 showing HTTP 500 Internal Server Error

And, here is the screenshot from Google Chrome browser, which shows HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error):

HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error): An expected condition was encountered while the server was attempting to fulfill the request.

If you are saving your login password (remember password feature) in browser, then you may not get into this mess.  The above issue appears only for those who always manually type password to login. I hope most of the users who are facing this problem are able to login using F5 (refresh) command.

Update (10-Feb-2013):  Without making any changes to my settings, today the Facebook Login page is working perfectly. It looks like the Facebook team has fixed this bug silently :-)   I tried in all browsers, and the login works perfectly.  I hope it is working well for others too.

Firefox DownloadHelper Zero Bytes

Category: Browsers,Opensource,TechnologyKamlesh @ 11:38 am

Considering the Internet Bandwidth/Plans/Cost in India, I prefer to download favorite YouTube videos for Offline Viewing.  This helps me enjoy the videos without buffering. To achieve this, I am using Video Download Helper plug-in on Firefox.  Since past few days, when I download the video using Download Helper, it just downloads zero bytes file.

Firefox Plugin - Video DownloadHelper downloads 0 bytes

The above problem was acknowledged by Video DownloadHelper website, stating the following statement:

September 14th 2012 YouTube issue – We are aware of the problem that occurred on Sept 14th (13th if you are in the US). This is due to some changes YouTube just made. We are working hard at solving the issue. Please, give us a little bit of time and refrain from downrating the addon.

In fact, the Developers of this add-on provided a quick work-around by providing a beta version 4.9.10b2 of plugin for users. You can access this beta version from this link.  This helped many users to fix the zero bytes download problem.

Flash Update:

Download Helper version 4.9.10 (final release) Just after writing above post, when I restarted my Firefox, my DownloadHelper plug-in got upgraded to final version 4.9.10

Thanks to the Developers of this add-on to provide a quick fix for this problem. I am now able to download the YouTube videos without the zero bytes problem.

Browsers – NextGen

Category: BrowsersKamlesh @ 12:33 am

There has been high competition with Internet Explorer and Firefox browsers. Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 (for Web Developers and Designers) is available to download on Microsoft Website. At the same time, Firefox has come up with Firefox 3 (Release Candidate) on 16-May-2008.

Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 is a developer preview for web designers and developers to help prepare their websites for the launch of Internet Explorer 8. Some of the new features designed for developers include a developer toolbar and improved interoperability and compatibility. Internet Explorer 8 is designed to work in standard mode out of this box. However, Microsoft provides a way for users to browse the web in a way similar to Internet Explorer 7 by using the emulate Internet Explorer 7 button on the chrome.
Firefox 3 is based on the Gecko 1.9 Web rendering platform, which has been under development for the past 33 months. Building on the previous release, Gecko 1.9 has more than 14,000 updates including some major re-architecting to provide improved performance, stability, rendering correctness, and code simplification and sustainability. Firefox 3 has been built on top of this new platform resulting in a more secure, easier to use, more personal product with a lot more under the hood to offer website and Firefox add-on developers. Complete list of features are documented in the Release Notes.

IE 7 Less Vulnerable than Firefox 2?

Category: BrowsersKamlesh @ 7:45 am

According to reports, Mozilla Firefox 2 and Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 (IE) are both vulnerable to a bug that steals the login-id and password of users, with the help of a fake log-in page.

The bug has been dubbed as “Reverse Cross Site Request vulnerability” (RCSR) by Robert Chapin, who first discovered the flaw.
